Ales 204 Semester in Review
I heard quie abit about Ales204 before walking through the door on the first day of the new semester. People who took it last year before the revamp told me it was mostly a public speaking course which wasn't fun but it was useful. Last semester after the re-vamp I heard alot of complaining about using twitter and blogs alot, displaying alot of personal inomation in the projects. It made me not really enhuasistic for a class where how I have to display alot about myself I am a social person bu there is a part of a person's life I don't want random people to know espicially on blogs and assignments. I also got told there was a participation mark, I do all my assignments but I'm not one of the people who asks questions who ask questions or contibute to class disscussions every class. When the class first started I really ddn't undestand what the course's main goal was it seemed all over the map and the course really was.
Looking back at the class I was pleased about taking Ales 204 though it did have its up and downs (which is an understatement). The three ups were Twitter, how publishing work in scientific journals works, and showing communication is changing rapidly. Actually twitter and the uses of it was surprisisingly useful and the science posts were interesting and neat tool. The process of how scientific articles get published in journals was a great class very informative. The theory behind the course is true about the future communication changes as time goes on and being able to use the new tools can put yourself at an advantage from looking for a job to talking about a scientific conference. The three biggest lows in the class were the font class, flickered, and the Pecha Kucha lecture. Seriously why did we have a class on fonts then in the survey what's yor faourite font and Dr. Laccetti saying in class "I was surprised that he majority of you said you favourite font was Times New Roman". Flickr or what ever its spelled I was pissed because they did wanted some photos from your pesonal life which is a violation of my privacy, why did they even put that in the course. Finally we get to the Pecha Kucha which is a quick powerpoint at 20 seconds, sure boring presentations are brutal but some of the pecha kucha's were pretty boring to. Time doesn't really pay a factor its the presenter if the presenter has a good persona and is excited about the topic it will probably be good. Herès I think is a good presenting checklist http://paulgraham.com/investors.html.

Overall I would say this course needs alot of improvement and focus on one area and not ask for as much personal information. In my own opinion the profesional Facebook page was a joke and a waste of time because first off facebook is a social site not to many job employers say to themselves "i'm going facebook search random people till I find the perfect future employee". I know lots o employes check a persons facebook page they don't look at some random link leading to your profesional profile they will go to your personal look at your pictures to look at the dirt "a picture speaks a thousand words". By the way saying something is profesional on Facebook is an oxymoron its a social casual newtwork even companies at informal on it. When the course spent a lecture or two about resumes it was useful bu it didn't have anythin about cover letters which is just as important and shows why you are applying for that particular job.
A fellow student's blogpost worth checking out is http://buildingmye-portfolio.blogspot.ca/ because of a different positive perspective about this course.

Where's the Other Communication
With the ever changing world of technology the world is changing ever so drastically it brings up the question are we relying to much on technology. Technology does play an important role and has made permanment imprints in our lifestyles. When most technologies develop they are just novelties that are neat like microwaves people use to invite guess over and show how fast they could heat up a glass of water now microwaves are used in cooking all the time. When the internet came out people were thinking it was neat but who could imagine all the stuff we do online now like meeting your soul mate, half of your university work, online banking, and handling government issues. It seems there is no area where we won't allow technology be, but where is the absolute cutoff for our life and technology or does it not even exist. When does technology addictions begin do you have to check facebook 10+ times a day or make a tweet every hour. Where has th non-technolgy communication skills gone from this course.
http://www.zigoti.com/2011/08/wear-interview-2/
Ales 204 is about communication theory and practise in class with its written, oral, and technology components. In the end that every project and assignment we had to use a computer for most of it. Should Ales 204 have as much of a computer propotion as it has or should it teach us in other communications. Could they actually teach us to write a proper cover letter during the resume part not just internet variations. During the podcast part could they have a listen to be able to handle a personal interview being able to talk to the interviewer proffesional making eye contact and being able to have an interview go smoothly. How to dress professionally and behave for an interview like don't dress inappropiate (means no cleavage, no underwear showing, sparse makeup and perfume, no holes in clothes, no hats, and no sun glasses). or tell a story when your drunk and don't talk about your flaws for ex. "I can't work under pressure well". There are so many people to people communication skills that are valuable to have that I wished this course did cover, technology is cool and coming more important but isn't all of it. For the presentations I wished they focused more on the presenting part not just some random scientific articles because a presenter that is energetic and is enthuastic can give me a half ass presentation that I'm fully aware unlike a pecha kucha (if you are not a good presenter its still boring even though it might be faster). Here is a link how to have good posture for public speaking and presentations http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAhg73Q3ab0.
Thats my main rant about how we learn so much about social newtwroking but not much about on other aspects of communication. A persons blog that i reccommend is Brenda Le about CSL in which she had a very positive experience http://brenda-le.blogspot.ca/2012/04/csl-with-campus-food-bank.html.

Also Wikis basically killed buying encyclopedias who wants a book shelf filled with 20 some books of rapidly changing information.
The article was fairly fun to write and edit because its the town where I grew up. At the time there wasn't much information on Wikipedia on it. Growing up there you learn allot of facts about the town that isn't really known to people who don't live near Sangudo. Writing any article close to the heart is fun. below I'm using my Wikipedia article as a picture encase it doesn't get accepted. Which is highly likely for small towns because they don't like much extra information beside location and the minimum about the town which is a problem about Wikipedia its not detailed enough its like an appetizer for the topic.

A fellow student article which was very informative is protein toxicity by Erika Brown because in today society higher and higher protein diets are coming more common. For some people who do have kidney problems they don't know of, this can be very dangerous. Awareness of this is very important.

Sangudo is a hamlet in Alberta, Canada within Lac Ste. Anne County.[2] It is located on Highway 43 and the Pembina River, approximately 99 kilometres (62 mi) northwest of Edmonton.
The village of Sangudo was formerly known as Deep Creek after a feature. The villagers could not officially named the settlement Deep Creek since there was another Deep Creek. In 1912 the community of Sangudo was named there were a few theories behind the naming of the settlement. The most known one is an acronym created by settlers. S Scott and Sutton, early settlers A Albers, the first postmaster N Nanton, hometown of Albers' wife G Gusal, a pioneer U United, characterizing the community D Deep Creek, the orignial name and a nearby feature O Orangeville, the first school The next story follows: A quotation from a letter received from Cecil Albers, son of the first Postmaster, reads: “Several factions wanted different names – no mutual agreement. To get a Post Office, there had to be a name. Dad took suggested names to the Postmaster in Edmonton. To settle argument, he suggested that he take the Post Office Manual, open at any page and Dad was to shut his eyes and point blindly at the page. Do this twice – first time, first syllable (San) second time, second syllable (Gudo). NAME – SANGUDO. Another theory was taking the name of two towns in California names and combining the names “Santa” and “Gudo”.
Sangudo was formerly incorporated as a village on April 12, 1937, but dissolved and reverted to hamlet status effective September 16, 2007.[3]
About every 20ish year a communal collection of the families of Sangudo and rural area contribute to a book of local history. The first was West of the 5th in 1959, the Lantern Era in 1979, and the New Horizons in 2001.

[edit] Demographics
“Sangudo the little village with the big heart”. In 2006, Sangudo had a population of 364 living in 184 dwellings, a 3.4% decrease from 2001. The village had a land area of 3.15 km2 (1.22 sq mi) and a population density of 115.6 /km2 (299 /sq mi).[1][edit] Industry
The main sources of revenue for the hamlet are tourism from traffic along Highway 43, oil production, and agriculture (mostly cattle ranching).[edit] Attractions
The Highway 43 Highway equipment museum is located along highway. Sangudo has two campgrounds one near on the east side of the Pembina River near the sports grounds and the other across the river. Sangudo also has an old historic wooden trestle that runs across the Pembina River, which is still in used. The hamlet is the home to Sangudo Speedway – a high-banked dirt oval that is a quarter mile in length. Sangudo features a sundial tourist monument that can be seen from Highway 43.The Sangudo Sundial-Elevator is one of the biggest sundials in existence with a height of 21 feet and a total weight of over 40 tons, including the marker rocks. The design is indeed unique and has been officially copyrighted by the Village of Sangudo. The design incorporates an additional feature which makes it particular to the Village of Sangudo. The angle of the upper roof slope is 54°54', which corresponds with the north latitude of Sangudo, and as such, enables the structure to function as a simple sundial. The combination of structural design and the time it tells (Sangudo Solar Time) makes the "Sundial Elevator" a unique structure, world wide. The large boulders were found in farm fields near Sangudo, having been deposited there during the last great glaciation as the Laurentide Ice Sheet moved from the northeast during the period 22,000 to 12,000 years ago.[edit] See also

Facebook Professional Cover Page
I have created a page on Facebook to promote myself in a professional tone, anything posted on Facebook I believe loses its professionalism. This will be a tool for future employers to get a better understanding of who I am and what I have done; you may notice it resembles a resume combined with a cover letter. In my Facebook page I introduce myself and shed light on my values achievements. I provided a highlight reel of my employment history to showcase my talents and experiences. On the Facebook page I shared some of my interests and hobbies. Most importantly I shared my hopes, dreams and aspirations for the future. It was important to me to present myself in a manor that proved my ambitions for the future and my hardworking, dedicated attitude. Its a net tool buy I still prefer a paper resume and cover letter that are strictly professional. Seriously how many employers go on random peoples Facebook and recruit people it cannot replace the method of resume and cover letter. No matter what facebook is a social network and it should be used as a social network not for business. Even the Bill Gates professonal page is alot more social than serious as seen below.
It was kind of interesting I never thought of Facebook as a marketing tool I always thought of it as a negative when employers can see people in not their greatest moments. Realistically, it is a social tool for me to stay in touch with friends. I am

fascinated with the many, many different ways technology can be utilized. This will be great for me as I continue my school career and when I am graduated. As technology evolves I to will grow with it and utilize all the opportunities it provides.
My classmate, Becky, has a very clear Facebook page, it is a great example with the detail and positive energy it has. The link to her blog is http://bbohlender.blogspot.ca/.

Introductory Blog Post
Salutations
Hi let me introduce myself my name is Lucas and this is my first Ales204 blog which seems like a challenge in its own way for a non-social media savvy person. I'm 19 and currently in my 2nd year Land Reclamation at the University of Alberta. Growing up on a farm near Dewberry, Alberta and living in the country gave me respect and love for the environment and wildlife of Alberta. Before I wanted to be a veterinarian for my love of animals, I would enjoy it but my true passion is wild animals and the interactions they have with the ecosystem and human activity.
Communication does play a critical role in the modern world as you can tell by schooling, news, and how much time people spend on social media is overwhelming. My social media is limited to Facebook because of peer pressure to get it and emailing because you need it for school. The rest of my internet use is youtube and popular science. Outside of school, I'm involved with the paddling club and dodgeball at Lister. Then at home I love playing any kind of card games from texas hold'em, crib, and keiser. I also do golf, skiing, mudding, shooting, berry picking lol, eating till you can't anymore and floating down the river.
What oil sand tar looks like and its a huge focus in land rec

In the modern day work force communication and computers are coming more and more involved especially in land reclamation. The use in reclamation goes from finding land locations with gps, identification of the soil, and communication plays a big role with dealing with companies and the public. A great place to learn more about land reclamation some projects and goals in Canada is at http://www.clra.ca/index.html. Social media is a powerful tool for any industry good and bad the interesting thing is what our social media will look like 20 years down the road.
